Combating Censorship In The World & Ourselves
Saturday, May 28, 2011 @ 3pm
Long Center, 701 W. Riverside Dr.

In 2010, The Smithsonian Museum banned the video by 80's artist David Wojnarowicz saying that is was anti-christian This banning sparked or resparked a national debate on issues of artistic censorship. Too often Women of Color and working class women are exempted from national debates of censorship. Poet Audre Lorde once said, your silence will not protect you. My keynote will address the particular issues of silence and censorship which affect women of color artists on both a personal & political level. Self censorship vs. societal and ways that it can be combated through artistic practice.

Pamela Sneed is a New York based poet, performer, writer and actress. She has been featured in the New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, The Source, Time Out, Bomb, Next, MetroSource, Blue,VIBE, HX, Karl Lagerfeld’s “Off The Record,” and on the cover of New York Magazine, She is the author of "Imagine Being More Afraid of Freedom Than Slavery," published by Henry Holt in April 1998 and the author of KONG & other works published by Vintage Entity Press 2009.

The Impact Of Visual Language On Culture
Saturday May 28, 2011 @ 4:30pm
Long Center, 701 W. Riverside Dr.

We often hear that we are what we eat but are we also what we see?

We are awash in images from high culture to low, from the art we see in museums to graffiti on the streets, from the latest reality show on TV to independent films screened at film festivals that improbably emerge as cultural icons.  Images from advertising pervade our lives. What is the impact of this cacophony of visual language on our culture? Do images reflect who we are or do they create who we are?  And if we are what we see, then how important is the role of the artist—especially the woman artist-in creating images that reflect who we are?

Chris Cowden has served as the Executive Director of Women And Their Work since 1986 and has overseen the work of more than 1,400 visual and performing artists. She directs all programming and is responsible for planning, implementation, administration, and evaluation as well as personnel and fiscal management. She has been on the Steering Committee of the National Performance Network and a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
